A MINIATURE VILLAGE

This is the new world and this is the new consciousness and this is the new Power; it is possible, and it is, and will be more and more manifest BECAUSE it is the new world, because it has never been before. ~ The Mother

Inspired by the words of Auroville’s founder “The Mother”, and her vision; “A new world is possible". Orly has created a miniature village of altered old brushes people, by-products of a throw-away society, the worn-out brushes have been transformed into charming and memorable characters. Portraying people with diverse backgrounds; race, religion, social class and gender, representing an international community.

As a part of the artisanal movement in Auroville, she makes them bright and colorful and detailing them with subtle humor as they are rendered in a sometimes highly abstract form. Color has a role to play; the bright palette gives each sculpted piece has its own individual essence.

The overall project is constructed with intrinsic motivation, personal connections and powerful emotions, perpetuated in collaboration with the participants of numerous Upcycling Brushes workshops carried in the past years.

The Upcycled brushes installation was displayed at the Auroville film festival 2020.

Engagement through Upcycling:

Orly taught herself to think outside the box and see objects for their intrinsic value instead of their intended use only. She relishes that the art of upcycling demands a great deal of imagination and resourcefulness.

Running workshops has been an important part of the project. Orly teaches participants how to enjoy upcycling, explore the process, materials, a few techniques, and shared her experience while linking to mindfulness and well-being. She has run workshops in the past for various outreach programs in schools, corporations and within the community.

The Learning Community:  Orly believes It essential to be in touch with tangible objects and tactile processes in  digital age. The interactive workshops were designed to partake in social change through pleasant activities, bringing people together, children and adults within the international community and outside. Often, workshop participants seemed to enjoy these activities and often commented on how therapeutic the activities are.

Lessons in Sustainability: The interactions have helped to bring up the topic of sustainability in daily living ; encouraging participants to take more notice of their habits. The workshops are aimed to empower people with the sense of freedom and responsibility to foster the changes the world needs most, armed with creative skills to form art using sustainable sources and repurpose waste.
